Why is my school iPad WiFi not working?

Please read the whole answer before proceeding. It will help us to find out if the problem is with the iPad, or something else.

The Basics First
WiFi radio waves get weak if your device is away from the router, or if dense walls exist between them, etc..The radio waves coming out of most WiFi routers is omni directional, that is why at our schools we placed our WiFi Access Points facing down in the middle of the classrooms ceiling. This allows the devices to have strong signal, and to not easily disconnect when moving from classroom to classroom. How is yours installed at home? If in doubt, keep your router 5 to 6 feet away from other electronic devices that may interfere, and in line of sight with your end device (phone, iPad, laptop, etc.).

If the previously described is not an issue with your home WiFi set up, let's move on to the next steps.

The next steps include:

  • WiFi speed tests with personal device, and with the school iPad.
  • If needed, reseting the school iPad.

Speed Tests From Two Different Locations

Test one:
Location: Same room where your home WiFi Router is located.
Device to Use: Personal device (iPad, or phone, or laptop).

  • Connect the personal device to the same WiFi network that your school iPad is connected to.
  • Connect to: https://speedtest.net.
  • Click on the "GO" button. This process may take about a minute to complete.

Test two:
Location: From the location that you normally do your school work.
Device to Use: Same device used in test one.

  • Run the speed test from the same website you the speed test one.

Test three:
Location: Same room where your home WiFi Router is located.
Device to Use: Your school iPad.

  • Run the speed test from the same website you did the speed test one.

Test four:
Location: From the location that you normally do your school work.
Device to Use: Your school iPad.

  • Run the speed test from the same website you did the speed test one.

Interpreting the Results:
If the download speed is about 10Mbps, it should be good for the school distance learning. Of course, the higher the download speed, the faster the webpages and downloads will be.

If your school iPad still continues to have WiFi connectivity issues

  1. Quit all the open apps (Here is how: https://rusd.tech/faq/#how-do-i-close-open-ipad-apps).

  2. Turn your device off.

  3. Wait a minute.

  4. Turn it back on, and connect the iPad to your home WiFi network: Settings > WiFi.

  5. If the iPad is not connecting, or if it connects, but you cannot connect to any website, please, reset the iPad; the steps are here: http://rusd.tech/faq/#how-to-reset-ipad.

  6. If the above is not resolving your issue, please, contact us via email (help@reedschools.org) and please let us know you have done these steps.
